Sapience Web Format Design Layouts
For the website layouts, I worked on the homepage and feature well article’s designs. Transferring the information content from magazine format to a web article format while keeping the consistent style of the magazine brand was the main challenge in this part of the project.
Researching into how real magazine brands lay out their articles in their websites was a helpful step in handling this challenge. The site design for the Sapience website echoes that of notable science magazines like those of Scientific American or WIRED.
While the content of the article might be the same for both magazine and website, the way it is presented is a lot different as the magazine format is able to utilize the horizontal layout of a book spread while the website can benefit from the scrolling action which made it lean towards the vertical format.
By placing images that are vertically long next to the text column, the viewers that would read through the article are able to receive both visual and textual information simultaneously. I believe such aspect was the strong point of the feature well article in the website format.
Overall, Sapience Magazine was a great design challenge project that allowed me to learn on how to handle elements of typography, text and image formatting, utilize grids and columns effectively, and understand the processes and terms in publication design.
